Care During Labor & Birth

Birth is truly one of life’s most remarkable events, full of promise and challenge.  It is the role of the midwives to ensure that you are as well prepared - physically, emotionally and spiritually- as is possible, and as well supported as you wish to be. During the birth of your baby midwives provide loving support, grounded reassurance and professional clinical care. It is your day and we are at your service.

We promote the natural, physiologic flow of birth in many ways:

  • midwives who are known to you
  • a familiar environment (birth suite or home)
  • support for the involvement of fathers, partners, family, friends or doulas
  • encouragement to eat and drink throughout labor
  • freedom of movement and use of supportive props (birth ball, upright birth stool, etc)
  • patience with the pace of labor
  • water labor and birth

We monitor and ensure safety in the following ways:

  • careful prenatal screening and health education
  • regular monitoring of mom’s vital signs and baby’s heart tones using a hand-held doppler
  • on-site emergency equipment and medications including IV fluids and resuscitation equipment
  • excellent relationship with local hospital and access to emergency transport when needed
  • continuous care and support in the event of a hospital transport

We prioritize bonding between mother and baby with:

  • immediate skin to skin contact
  • delayed cord clamping
  • early breastfeeding
  • delayed routine newborn procedures
  • large beds to accommodate the whole family

Families remain with us for approximately 4 hours after birth before returning home. In that time you can expect:

  • support with breastfeeding
  • monitoring of both mom and baby’s wellbeing
  • encouragement to eat and drink
  • a complete newborn physical and neurological exam (done by your side on the bed)
  • any necessary repair to mom’s tissues (using local anesthetic)
  • verbal and written information about care of mom and babe in the first days
  • home visit and first visit back to PSBC scheduled
