Founders

Puget Sound Birth Center was founded by Licensed Midwife Lee Anne Shelley to fill a great need in our community: To provide families with safe, gentle, out-of-hospital birth options and midwifery care while respecting their role as the primary caregivers for their family.

Founded in February of 1996, Puget Sound Birth Center was the first "cooperative model" birth center, granting professional practice privileges to both Licensed Midwives and Certified Nurse-Midwives in an effort to provide expectant families with greater access to the community of midwives in the Puget Sound area.

Puget Sound Midwives & Birth Center was founded in 1999 by the following women, deeply committed to promoting and protecting the midwifery model of care as a viable and desirable choice for healthy women and their families and to increasing the scope of the Puget Sound Birth Center's impact in our community.
