A Study
on Birthing Practices
All your calls and emails to legislators worked!
In the last newsletter, we requested
your help in reducing licensing fees for midwives. We were amazed and
humbled by your overwhelming response and by the impact you had: the
legislation passed, immediately reducing the licensing fees from $1200 to
$450 for this year, and setting the stage for a much more equitable and less
expensive licensing fee structure in the future. We can't thank you enough!
If
you would like to help some more on the political front, there is currently
a Congress-led effort to gather input from citizens on how to improve the
healthcare system in this country. We believe that the midwifery model of
care is an important piece of any safe, patient-centered, affordable
healthcare system, and you as clients are the best advocates.
For more information on this unique
national forum on healthcare, go to
www.citizenshealthcare.gov.
There, you can also complete the "Health Care Poll", "Tell Us What You
Think" and/or the "Share Our Experiences" sections. Each sections takes up
to 10 minutes or so to complete.

Babywearing Class
We would like to find out if there is
interest in a babywearing class at PSBC, maybe a couple of hours on a
Saturday spent learning about different types of baby carriers and how to
use them effectively. If this sounds like a class you'd be interested in
taking, please click on this link and let us know!

More and more parents are realizing the benefits of seeking chiropractic
care for their children. And how smart they are! The best time to get
checked by a chiropractor is as an infant, as many spinal problems seen in
adults actually began at birth. In fact, numerous research studies show that
an average of 75% of infants are born with a misalignment in the upper neck.
Significant spinal trauma can occur at birth. Even “natural” birthing
methods cause a lot of stress to the upper spine, which is a critical area
in which the brain stem is protected and the spinal cord begins. A traumatic
or difficult birth, such as breech, forceps, or c-section, puts a tremendous
amount of stress on the infant’s skull, spinal column, and pelvis. The
resultant irritation to the nervous system caused by spinal misalignment can
be the cause of colic, breathing problems (SIDS), nursing difficulties,
allergic reactions, and chronic infections. Not only is it important to have
newborns checked right away after birth, it is also critical to check the
spine as it goes through growth changes, such as when the infant is learning
to hold up the head, sit, crawl and walk, as these changes affect spinal
alignment.
Adjusting procedures are modified to fit the infant’s size, weight, and
unique spinal condition. The greatest thing about adjusting an infant is
that they respond so well to care, as their spinal problems have not been
present for as long as those found in adults. Plus, this care will help to
prevent future childhood afflictions. Having a yearly spinal checkup should
be part of the healthcare plan for any growing child!

Please contact Alana if you would be interested in participating in this
study:
"Have you given birth in the
last five years at home with a midwife or in a hospital with a physician?
Interested in talking about your birthing choices and experiences? If so,
you may be eligible to participate in a study being conducted by a
University of Virginia doctoral candidate in Sociology. Your participation
in the study is completely voluntary and you may decide to withdraw at any
time.
I will be in the Seattle area from July 15th to the end of August and
looking to interview approximately 30 women about their experiences of
childbirth."
